Chasm Architecture served as an Associate Design Architect in collaboration with architect of record, Eskew+Dumez+Ripple Associates on the McDonough #42 Elementary Charter School. The project consisted of renovating a historic New Orleans school operated by Choice Foundation. Located in the 7th Ward neighborhood of New Orleans, the three building campus occupies a full city block. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the property sustained an estimated three to six feet of standing water. The design team was commissioned to provide architectural services for a complete renovation of the school. The 65,000 square foot project required extensive studies of the historical characteristics as well as amenable design solutions to obtain accessible routes. The design team also modified the existing interior floor plan layout to meet a more demanding curriculum. Administrative offices were expanded and located in a manner that provide a secure entrance to the building. New restrooms and kitchen were added to better serve the students.
The feature space and beacon of the project is the dining room which fills one of two voids of the “E” letter shaped existing plan. The dining room / multi-purpose space is located on the north facade of the project which creates a perfect scenario for natural lighting, no matter the use of the space.
